70-year Trace of SNU Training Competent People
SNU has started from Sunchon Public Agricultural School on a site donated by Wooseok Kim, Jong-Ik in 1935 with an ambition to promote national consciousness and educating competent young people, followed by Sunchon Agro-Forestry Middle School(1946), Sunchon Agro-Forestry High School(1951), Sunchon Agro-Forestry Vocational High School(1965), Sunchon Agro-Forestry Vocational School(1973), and Sunchon Agricultural Vocational College(1979). Then, in 1982, it has become a 4-year college with 10 Departments including Department of Agronomy. Master's Degree Programme was begun in 1987, and, finally, it has developed to Sunchon National University with 5 colleges in 1991, making it true to the name.
Ever since 1991, Graduate Schools of such as Education(1993), Industry(1994), Management and Public Administration(1995), Information Sciences(1996) have been established in a row, and Ph. D. Programme has been started since 1994. Besides, in 1994, SNU established the Incorporated Foundation of Academic Scholarship with the fund of 10 billion won donated by POSCO in order to educate the competent people in the region. Also, the Lifelong Education Center was established in 1998, which is contributing to community development together with Farming Education Center and Language Center. Lately in 2001, SNU opened the ultra-modern Library and Information & Computer Center, and has been carrying out the role of knowledge and information center with electronic library.
SNU has accelerated its innovation both internally and externally so much that it was accredited as an Executing Institute for various National Policies such as Specialized University in Agricultural Area, Brain Korea(BK) 21 Institution, etc. As of 2000, SNU's ranking was 17th out of 182 universities across the nation in the field of excellent financial performance of support by Ministry of Education and Human Resources. And, the excellence of SNU is recognized as a taking-off university by being selected as a leading university in terms of performance in education and research area of performing self-development plans of national universities in 2002.
In addition, SNU became the university in charge of the Science Education Institute for the Gifted Youth and Jeonnam Technopark, and College of Education became the excellent college in the governmental evaluation in 2003.
